Crystal Aspect

We present an application for smartphones that uses augmented reality (AR) to render dynamically interactive 3D models of inorganic crystal structures. Available for free on both the Google Play and Apple App Stores, Crystal Aspect can be used as an educational tool to help students in introductory materials science or solid-state inorganic chemistry courses develop 3D spatial reasoning skills that are crucial for understanding inorganic crystal structures.

Intended to augment traditional lesson plans, Crystal Aspect allows students to relate 3D models to the common 2D projections used when discussing crystal structures. In a classroom setting, we find that students respond positively to the app and find it generally helpful. We believe that this app gives students intuitive software for exploring crystal structures that minimizes barriers to use.
